How to Renew Tile Grout
September 8, 2020
Few things foil a bathroom deep clean like grungy grout. Learn how to refresh it in an afternoon!
Sometimes, no matter how much TLC you give your bathroom floor, it just won’t sparkle like you want it to. Tile grout usually gets dark and dirty in high-traffic areas or moldy in areas next to sinks and tubs.
But don’t worry — you don’t need an expensive bathroom renovation to get rid of gross grout. Believe it or not, you can totally change the look and color of your grout for less than $20.
Supplies:
- Vinegar and water solution (or whatever floor cleaner you prefer)
- Scrub brush
- Paper towels
- Craft paintbrush
- Grout renewer product (We used Grout Renew, and comes in an assortment of colors. Choose the color that best fits your bathroom.)

Step 1
Clean the tile as thoroughly as possible. You can use a vinegar and water solution or your usual floor cleaner.
Grout renewal products work most effectively on clean, dry grout, so let the tile and grout completely dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 2
Dip your paintbrush into the grout renewer and carefully paint it on the grout.
Do your best to avoid getting any of the grout renewer on the tile — it will stain your floor. If you do accidentally get some on the tile, quickly wipe it off with a paper towel.
We recommend having a wad of paper towel in one hand and the paintbrush in the other; this way you’ll always be prepared to wipe.

Step 3
Continue to paint the renewer onto all of the grout lines in the room, changing out the paper towel as needed.
This process can get a little boring, especially if you have a big bathroom. Jam out with a podcast or recruit a DIY partner to keep you company!
Step 4
Once all the grout lines are painted, you have to let it dry. Stay off of the floor for at least 24 hours, and keep it dry for at least 72 hours.
Once the product is dry, your grout will look fabulous — and be protected against mold and mildew.
Now stand back and admire your gorgeous “new” bathroom tile grout. No more stains, no more mildew spots — and no big-budget renovation needed!
